Risotto

In Italian restaurants, one of the common things to find is risotto. You might be wondering, what is risotto? Rissoto is an Italian dish made from a particular type of rice called arborio rice. This type of rice is starchy, short-grained, and it can absorb lots of water without becoming soggy and mushy. In addition, it’s also what gives the risotto a creamy texture. When you make risotto, you add the arborio rice in a pot, and you slowly cook it while adding tiny amounts of liquid at a time. You would keep on doing this for about 20 minutes until your risotto is finished. A former chef named Danilo Alfaro recommends people to make their own risotto than ordering it from a restaurant. This is since risotto takes quite a while to make, and you can’t leave it for long because, according to Alfaro, “…the starch will start to congeal, causing it to turn stiff and gluey.” Instead, restaurants would cook it halfway and cook it again when a customer orders it, but it only takes half the time to cook it. However, it doesn’t taste as good as a freshly made risotto. If you have some spare time this weekend, I recommend trying to make risotto for your next meal!

Irvins’ Fish Skin

In Singapore, one of the most popular things that tourists buy is fish skin, and it’s usually from a store called Irvins. Irvins became a top hit in Southeast Asia last year, and its popularity is growing every day. The fish skin they sell is covered with a special salted egg seasoning. Once you try them, you will experience a truly unforgettable and fantastic taste, and it’ll make you lick your fingers and want more. This snack is something you really must try no matter what!

Irvins had created other products over time such as:

Tornado Potatoes

Several years ago, in Korea, I ventured around the local food vendors, and one of them sold tornado potatoes. Captivated by the name, I decided to buy one and try it out. I was shocked when the person gave something that looked like dozens of potato chips all pierced into a stick. I quickly realized that they were a spiral cut potato on a stick, and they resemble the shape of a tornado. They looked a bit similar to curly French fries but shorter and crispier. When I tasted it, I was shocked by deliciousness and desired to have more. The tornado potato ships were made from having the spiral cut potatoes on the stick deep-fried and seasoned with a savoring seasoning. If you’re going to go to Korea soon, I recommend trying these out!

Indomie

In Asian supermarkets, you can find a savory and delicious instant noodle called Indomie. Originating from Indonesia, Indomie is a successful instant noodle that you can find across the world. You can find it in Australia, America, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Papua New Guinea, Africa, and the Middle East.

Indomie has an unforgettable and piquant taste; however, it is extremely unhealthy. There are different varieties of Indomie, such as:

  • Mi Goreng ( stir-fried noodles)
  • Mi Goreng Sate ( Satay flavored noodles)
  • Mi Rasa Kaldu Ayam (Noodles with chicken-flavored broth)
  • Mi Rasa Kari Ayam (Noodles with chicken curry-flavored broth)
  • Mi Rasa Ayam Spesial (Special chicken-flavored noodles)

Eggs

Eggs, there are numerous ways to consume them. You can poach, bake, boil, fry, or even eat them raw. In addition, they are easy to mix with other ingredients. With additional components, you turn them into an omelet, scotch eggs, egg benedict, scrambled eggs, or deviled eggs. Eggs are an excellent source for protein to start your day. Although eggs are full of protein, they are also pretty high in cholesterol, so be sure not to eat too many!

Eggs are so popular worldwide that a Japanese company, Sanrio invented an egg cartoon character. This egg is one of my most favorite cartoon characters and is known for being extremely lazy. This lazy egg is named Gudetama. Released back during 2017, Gudetama’s popularity has increased over time. Now you can find Gudetama merchandises, cafes, and videos everywhere. Each Gudetama video ends with a person dressed as an egg dancing to the theme song. Here is one of the Gudetama videos created by Sanrio:

Steak

One of my most favorite dishes is steak. Steak is a dish composed of a cooked cut of meat. Some places might give you free additional sides, but for some others, you need to pay an extra cost. There are many cuts of steaks, such as tenderloin, new york strip, sirloin, porterhouse, and ribeye. One of the most common sides is potatoes. They are served as french fries, mashed potatoes, or baked potatoes. Other extras include mushrooms, corn on the cob, or a small salad. My personal favorite cut is the ribeye with a side of sautéed mushrooms and mashed potatoes. Although steaks are high in protein, they also contain fat. This is why it’s better not to eat steak often. Steak is also a great meal to have when you are celebrating an event or occasion. What do you like to have with your steak? Takoyaki

Hi everyone! A friend gave me the idea to do takoyaki for this post, and I thought, “Why not?”. Takoyaki is a popular Japanese snack that you can find in both Japan and Japanese restaurants or shops overseas. They’re shaped like tiny round ping-pong balls filled with octopus. This is the reason why this famous snack is called takoyaki: tako means octopus, and octopus is the main ingredient. The batter consists of flour, eggs, and water. Then it would be cooked on a special hotplate made specifically for cooking takoyaki. Served with mayonnaise, seaweed, bonito flakes, and a special sauced, takoyaki something you must certainly try!

Ceasor Salad

One of the common and my most favorite salad is Caesar salad, and it’s from Mexico! Shocked? You’re not the only one. I asked dozens of other people, and they were also shocked. This Mexican salad contains croutons, chopped lettuce, and a special Caesar dressing. Strips of chicken and boiled eggs are added in some places. There is no classic dressing for every recipe has different ingredients, but they could contain egg yolks, anchovies, garlic, tofu, cheese, or mayonnaise.

Although the salad is called Caesar salad, it has nothing to do with the famed Julius Caesar. Instead, it was named after the creator, Caesar Cardini. Cardini owned a restaurant and invented the Caesar salad when many customers came to his restaurant one night. Cardini didn’t want to run out of vegetables, so he created a salad with a mixture of other ingredients. That salad became known as the Caesar salad.

Macarons

Macarons, or also known as French macaroons, are an excellent way to sweeten your day. Most people confuse macarons and macaroons because they have very similar spelling. However, they are totally different from each other. Their shape, experience, taste, and texture are completely different. Macaroons are also a lot easier to make than macarons, and this is the reason for their major difference in price.

Macarons (left) Macaroons (right)

Macaroons are very difficult to make for several reasons: it requires practice, patience, and expertness. They contain flour, sugar, and egg whites. Macaroons are fragile and slightly hard on the outside, and there is a soft, sweet filling on the inside. If you need something sweet at any time of the day, then a macaron would be the best choice.
